The Bible on Always Training

The Bible speaks extensively to the value of continual training and its relevance in the life of believers today. In verses such as 1 Timothy 4:7-8, the Apostle Paul writes, “Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” This passage teaches us that although physical exercise has some benefits, spiritual exercise has substantially greater benefits, and is therefore something worth investing in.

In addition, the people of Israel are frequently encouraged by God throughout scripture to continually practice and improve the faith. For example, in Deuteronomy 6:5-6, God tells the Israelites to love, fear and serve Him “with all your heart and with all your soul” and, to “keep all [his] commandments and statutes.” The emphasis in these verses on continual focus and devotion is an indication that God expects His followers to continue growing in their faith as they encounter different circumstances in life.

Furthermore, the Bible exhorts believers to engage in activities that develop and protect their respective faiths. In 2 Timothy 2:15, Paul reminds Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” Here, Paul is advising Timothy to receive regular instruction surrounding scripture so that he may accurately share the gospel with others. This counsel is equally applicable today, and encourages believers to continue furthering their knowledge so as to be prepared to share the truth of God’s word with lost souls.

Ultimately, the Bible provides ample instruction on the necessity of training and its importance to the life of the modern believer. Biblically, training and developing one’s faith is not optional, and doing so is seen as an integral part of the journey to fulfill one’s calling. Believers are commanded to engage in activities that build and protect their faith, such as studying scripture, participating in regular worship, and memorizing important passages. Through consistent engagement with the Bible, Christians today can actively seek a deeper understanding of their faith and develop deeper relationships with the Lord.
